“What actually makes people happy is full engagement. You are most alive when working at the limit of your abilities.”

Bill McKibben, author

According to research on engagement, there are three types of employees:

Engaged employees work with a belief and commitment to their organization and company. They strive to be a part of the team, to move the company forward, and to seek better ways to achieve their tasks.

Not-engaged employees are essentially “checked out” during the day. They are present in the workplace, but their focus is on other concerns—be it family, personal problems, or discouragement about their work.

Actively disengaged employees are your worst nightmare. These are employees who are actively working to undermine the workplace, whether by sabotaging projects, challenging their supervisors, or disrupting workplace communication.

According to a Gallup poll, truly engaged employees make up only 29% of the workplace, while 54% are not engaged and 17% are actively disengaged.

Engagement is a hot topic in workplace management circles, since having engaged employees means that your employees view the workplace as a satisfying two-way environment. Engaged employees feel that managers and supervisors are concerned about their well-being and create a workplace respectful of the employee’s needs, professional and personal development, and work-life balance.
